Architecture as Threshold
ENGAWA is conceived as a lived threshold, a house that exists in the space between architecture and landscape. Rather than defining a rigid boundary, the project creates depth at the edge, allowing the interior to extend outward while the garden gently inhabits the domestic realm.
Layers of Light, Material, and Movement
A sequence of horizontal planes, filtered timber screens, and planted courtyards establishes a layered condition of light, shadow, and privacy. Concrete volumes provide permanence and structural clarity; wood introduces warmth and human scale. Circulation unfolds through sheltered passages and semi-open platforms, where movement becomes experience and the landscape is constantly present.
Social spaces open fully toward the garden, dissolving enclosure, while private volumes remain anchored within solid frames. The result is a calibrated balance between exposure and protection. ENGAWA is not a house placed on a site , it is a continuous edge, a quiet architecture that inhabits the threshold between built form and nature.
