Urban Park
The project envisions the transformation of the existing football plaza located in downtown Cartago, directly in front of San Luis Gonzaga School, into a multifunctional urban park that acts as both a landmark and a civic gathering space. The intervention seeks to reactivate the city center by fostering an inclusive, accessible, and intergenerational environment that strengthens public life and restores the plaza as a shared urban stage.
The park integrates children’s playgrounds, fitness areas for older adults, pedestrian pathways, and a running loop, along with a multi-use court adaptable to various sports. Green mounds, an open-air amphitheater, seating areas, play zones, and a café pavilion create a layered landscape of activity and rest.
A central promenade encourages small-scale entrepreneurship and temporary programming, reinforcing the connection between the park, the school community, and the broader public. The design also responds to mobility by incorporating bus stops and bicycle facilities, promoting active and public transportation.
Formally, the project balances built structures and landscaped areas through a clear geometric framework that operates as an urban lung.
By reconnecting nature with the city center and framing the iconic architecture of San Luis Gonzaga School, the proposal establishes the park as a new civic reference point for Cartago, an open contemporary space rooted in community and place.
